How Much Better Did McDonald’s Best-Everrrr Burgers Really Get?

We tried the new formulation to see if they're worth the hype.

It’s a tale as old as time: you’re hungry, and you’re craving something to eat that can be served quickly, but also something hearty and savory. You order a McDonald’s burger.

Most — if not all of us — are familiar with how McDonald’s burgers taste. After all, there have hardly been any changes to it apart from the new sandwich combos here and there over the years. However, this year saw the launch of McDonald’s Best-Everrrr Burgers (yes, that’s best-ever with three extra r’s) and of course, we really couldn’t resist putting the famed burgers to the test to find out whether they really are, as McDonald’s puts it, hotter, jucier, tastier, fresher, softer, toastier, and saucier.

What You Need to Know About McDonald’s Best-Everrrr Burgers

1 The burger improvements are here to stay.

You might think that the best-everrrr burgers are available for a limited time only, but really, they’re here to stay. In an effort to improve the quality of their burgers, McDonald’s has rolled out many small but impactful changes in their kitchen operations to ensure that each burger meets the new, higher standards that make them their best-ever burgers yet.

2 The best-everrrr burgers are available in all McDonald’s stores nationwide.

No burger gets left behind in McDonald’s campaign to serve better burgers! The Best-Everrrr Burger campaign was launched last July 15 and all McDonald’s branches have been updated to be able to serve this new version of the McDonald’s burgers.

3 All McDonald’s burgers get upgraded to their best-ever versions.

If you’re wondering which burgers got improved, you’ll be happy to know that all the McDonald’s burgers got the same treatment. This means that no matter which McDonald’s burger is your favorite — be it the Double Cheeseburger, the Big Mac, or the Quarter Pounder with Cheese — you’ll find some changes in how they’ve been prepared.

What We Liked About McDonald’s Best-Everrrr Burgers

Full disclosure: this Yummy editor was invited to a tasting session with McDonald’s, where they served us the Double Cheeseburger, the Big Mac, and the Quarter Pounder with Cheese. However, we did get a chance to order the burgers outside of the event, and we can confirm that the quality of the burgers were the same.

The burger patties really did taste jucier and meatier.

Not gonna lie; I wasn’t the biggest fan of McDonald’s burgers because they always felt a little dry to me. However, one of the first things I did notice upon taking a bite was just how juicy the patties were; the flavor is unmistakably beefy and savory, and every time the burger was squeezed so that you could take a bite, you could see the patty juices just oozing out.

Besides the juicer patties, the way they changed how they treated the onions in the burgers did not go amiss, especially for the Double Cheeseburger (this is my go-to order). Gone is the sharp, raw taste of the shredded onions in the burger, and in its place is a just-right sweetness you could only get from cooked onions that just pairs well with the beefy patty.

The buns were softer, toastier, and fluffier.

Buns are the unsung heroes of burgers, and how well they are prepared can make or break the whole experience. For McDonald’s best-ever burgers, gone are the limp and sometimes kind of sad, pale buns of yore; each burger is now served with a glazed, golden brown bun. While the Double Cheeseburger gets a plain bun, the Big Mac and Quarter Pounder with Cheese get distinct sesame-topped buns. The best part? Not only were the buns more delicious because they tasted buttery; they are fluffier and softer now, too. They also add an extra depth of flavor as they’re meticulously toasted before assembly — and it’s that toast that also makes the buns firmer and easier to handle.

The veggies were fresher.

If you like the taste of raw onions, though, part of the changes they made to the Quarter Pounder with Cheese was to make it with fresher sliced onions! They’re sweet and just the right bite-sized bits that mean you’re not accidentally pulling out a whole piece of chopped onion when you go in for a bite.

Meanwhile, one of our favorite upgrades to the Big Mac is just how much fresher the lettuce is. To ensure that you get served green, vibrant lettuce, McDonald’s now has a shorter holding time for their stock of lettuce, and each crunchy bite is a testament to this small but crucial change.

Each bite was saucier.

Of the three burgers we tasted, the Big Mac was the one that had the most notable change when it came to the sauce: it now has 50% more sauce in it, and you really get a taste of the tangy, creamy burger sauce in each bite. But there’s another almost imperceptible change that they made to each burger: the ketchup and mustard are now applied to the patties in such a way that they’re spread evenly. Gone are the days when you’d be surprised to find a dollop of ketchup in the center of your burger; now, each bite is evenly spruced up with McDonald’s signature ketchup and mustard.

What We Didn’t Like About The Best-Everrrr Burgers

The new packaging makes some of the burgers harder to eat.

A landmark change McDonald’s has made to the burgers is that they now serve them in clam shell packaging, and they’ve gotten rid of the wrapping papers that the burgers used to be tucked in.

On the one hand, we are happy to say goodbye to the wrapping papers; we are not going to miss finding melted cheese stuck to them, for one! However, without the wrappers, one is now expected to enjoy the burger with one’s bare hands. This might be inconvenient when you’re eating on the go, because the buns are glazed.  It’s a minor inconvenience when the bigger picture is getting to eat the much-improved burgers (especially since most of us now have our hand sanitizers handy, thanks to the virus-that-shall-not-be-named). On the whole, it’s okay when you’re biting into the relatively mid-sized Double Cheeseburger and the Quarter Pounder with Cheese, but heftier burgers like the Big Mac can get somewhat messy.

So, Are the New McDonald’s Best-Everrrr Worth The Hype?

The short answer: we think so. Before the I was invited to McDonald’s tasting session, I actually ordered the burgers in cognito. Okay, okay — it was because a full two days before the invite, yours truly found herself hangry and craving McDonald’s nuggets. One thing led to another and somehow I had also ordered a Double Cheeseburger (again, I was hangry, okay?) and I remember thinking that something was especially good about the burger that night. I had chalked it up to being hungry, and I did clock the lack of the paper wrapper, but overall I thought, specifically, “Whoever grilled this burger did an especially great job.”

Little did I know that it was, in fact, an effort by no less than the all of McDonald’s. The changes are subtle but by no means insignificant, and knowing what I know now — that the McDonald’s team deliberately set out to make their burgers hotter, jucier, tastier, fresher, softer, toastier, and saucier — I can say from experience that these really are McDonald’s best-everrrr burgers yet… and yes, it does deserve to be said with all three extra r’s.
